  Visitors Site

This Charitable Trust has been established to create a Centre that will celebrate the design, build and operation of Barrow-built Submarines since 1886. It will serve both as an absorbing educational venue and a worthwhile visitor attraction for present and future generations.

The Centre will provide a series of displays showing the evolution of submarine building and operations at Barrow. Onyx will form the main attraction, enabling visitors to experience first-hand what life was like for the crew onboard this classic British submarine.

Proposed Visitors Centre (inside)

It is proposed to establish the Centre within the boundary of the successful Barrow Borough Council's flagship attraction the Dock Museum on North Road. This opposite the BAE Systems - Submarines massive Devonshire Dock Hall where modern submarines are currently assembled.

Within the boundary of the Dock Museum there is a graving dock which is the proposed location to put Onyx.

The Graving Dock is a listed structure, and would provide a fitting location, with the interpretive building constructed over the dock gate and down into the dock.

The building itself would be architecturally elegant in its own right, providing a complementary "bookend to the Dock Museum Building at the other end of the graving dock which would be kept dry allowing visitors to walk around and view the outside of the hull.
